What is a Motivational Map?

A Motivational Map® is a self perception inventory, created by James Sale, and came about through his research into human motivation. Through understanding what motivates you and how motivated you are against your top motivators you can increase your performance. Your motivational map does not stereotype you and provide your current motivational state.

Motivational Maps® informs you of your current motivation through 9 different motivators. The motivators are clustered into groups of 3, with each cluster sharing a common profile. The three clusters are defined below:

Defender – seeking security and stability

Friend – seeking belonging and friendship

Star – Seeking recognition, admiration and respect

Adult Map Report

When you complete a adult map, you get a report which will give you your overall motivation and the 9 motivators in rank order.

Youth Map Reports

For the youth maps, there are 3 reports: One for the student, one for the parent and one for the teacher, mentor. You also get a motivation score for each motivator which indicates how well you are motivated against the particular motivator along with your overal motivation percentage.

Through coaching, we review the map with you and identify areas to increase your or your teams motivation, and hence performance.

Your motivation changes over time as you change roles, grow or after key life events. We therefore recommend you complete a map every couple of years to see if your motivations have change and therefore whether you need to adjust your focus in any area.
